A total of twenty six staff and students from Hawthorn High School, Pontypridd High School and Bryncelynog Comprehensive along with teachers from Cwmlai Primary School and Maesybryn Primary School, all returned this week from a life changing visit to Uganda. The trip funded by the British Council Global School Partnership Grant and arranged through PONT all visited their twinned schools during February half term.
Staff member Candice Davies along with four sixth form students Ellyssa Bryant, Hannah Fatkin, Abigail Hollinshead and Bethan Horton from Hawthorn High School travelled across the globe to spend a week in their twinned school in Mbale –
Other activities throughout the week included: visiting orphanages throughout the Mbale district presenting the children with clothes, books, pencils, punching balloons and lollies that had been donated by staff at Hawthorn.
Inspirational womens groups were also visited where they told their stories of how against all odds they turned their lives around to provide for and bring together their small communities. All these visits were greeted with big smiles and hugs.
To wind down in between these emotional times they visited some tourist attractions throughout the 10 days such as the Source of the Nile in Jinja, Mabira Rainforest, Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumali District, to see the views from Wanale Hill, Entebbe Wildlife Reserve where they caught sight of the rare white rhino and also a splash around in the pool with some orphans at the Mt Elgon Hotel.
Although the journey via Amsterdam and Rwanda was exhausting, it was an experience that will never be forgotten.
Hawthorn High would like to thank staff members Mrs Brencher and Mr Baldwin from Pontypridd High School for organising the full on itinerary and their vast knowledge, advice and support over the 10 days in Uganda. Thanks also go to MSS Group along with 1st Image for sponsoring our polo shirts and hoodies.
